Single-phase transformers Definition
Single-phase transformers are essential components in energy conversion. These transformers enable machines and systems to be efficiently adapted to different mains voltages and types. As key players in the single-phase power supply, they offer solutions for applications that require a stable single-phase output voltage.
Single-phase transformers Function
Single-phase transformers fulfill a central function in electrical systems by converting electrical voltages efficiently and safely. They work according to the principle of electromagnetic induction, which enables the contactless transfer of energy between two circuits.
How does a single-phase transformer work?
A single-phase transformer basically consists of two electrically separate windings – the primary winding and the secondary winding – which are arranged together on a magnetically conductive iron core. If an alternating voltage is applied to the primary winding, a changing magnetic field is created, which is transferred to the secondary winding via the iron core. This in turn generates an induced alternating voltage.
Depending on the winding ratio between the primary and secondary windings, the voltage can be increased (high-voltage transformer) or decreased (low-voltage transformer). The electrical power is virtually maintained – only minor losses occur due to heating and magnetization current.
Galvanic isolation for greater safety
A decisive advantage of single-phase transformers is the so-called galvanic isolation. As there is no direct electrical contact between the input and output, the transformer offers effective protection against electrical interference, overvoltages or short circuits. This property makes it particularly valuable in sensitive control and safety applications.

The function of a single-phase transformer is not only reliable, but also extremely versatile. Its simple design and high efficiency make it suitable for a wide range of applications – from building services and industry to medical and measurement technology.
